A paint warehouse until 2021

Eleven metres to the roof trusses, which is the only reason two full-size courts fit. We kept the shutters, the concrete and the yellow floor lines, dropped in the glass, and hung the floodlights off the existing steel.

It is not a leisure centre. There is no pool, no sauna and no smoothie bar. There are two courts, cold water, and somewhere to sit while you wait for the one before yours to finish.

You will be rallying in ten minutes

The usual reason people don't try padel is a quiet worry about being the worst person on court. Three things worth knowing before you come.

It is always doubles

Four people, one court, never singles. A beginner and a decent player make a perfectly reasonable pair, which is not true of tennis.

The walls are in play

The ball comes off the glass and you carry on. It is why rallies last, and why the game is enjoyable well before you are any good at it.

The court is small

Twenty metres by ten. You do not need to be quick to reach the ball, and hitting it hard mostly just sends it out.

This is what half nine looks like

Almost nobody books the afternoon. Everybody books between eight and eleven, which is when the building is worth being in. Trial sessions run Tuesday to Thursday at 19:00 and 21:00, with a coach on the floor.

What it costs

KIVOS is a members' club, which means court time is booked by members and their guests rather than sold by the hour to whoever walks in.

The trial is not that. The trial is free and you are not signing anything.

No joining fee on either. One month's notice to leave. Rackets and balls are provided, so the membership is the whole cost.
